Kumano Taisha 熊野大社
Kumano Taisha is the other great shrine, in the District of Ou, listed in the Izumo Fudoki as Izumo no kuni ichinomiya. The Fudoki says that the original location was on top of the Kumano mountain. It is somewhat out of the way in a region of mountains and valleys and streams. The shrine buildings make a lovely picture set against the green backdrop of the mountains with a crimson arched bridge in the foreground. Here, the great deity of Kumano, Susano-o, is known fittingly as the deity of resurrection. The other enshrined deities are Inatahime and Isanami. Faces east.
